"Beyond Philosophy: How the Gospel Answers Life's Deepest Questions"
The Truth About Reality: Understanding the Gospel Through Metaphysics and the Law of Moses
Life is full of big questions. Have you ever wondered what is truly real? Or why there is evil and suffering in the world? What does it mean to exist, and how do we find meaning in our lives? These aren’t just random thoughts—these are the deep questions that humans have wrestled with for centuries. In philosophy, we call these questions metaphysics—the study of existence and reality.
But the answers to these questions aren’t just philosophical—they’re spiritual. And they can be found in one place: the gospel. When we understand the answers that the gospel provides, everything about life starts to make sense.
What is Real? The Nature of Reality
In metaphysics, we ask, "What is the nature of reality?" What is truly real? The Bible’s answer to that question is simple: God is the ultimate reality. The gospel teaches us that the God of the Bible is the Creator of all things. In the beginning, God created everything, and everything exists because of Him. The Law of Moses, given to the Israelites, begins with this truth: there is one God, the Creator of all things.
Everything in life—your purpose, the world around you, even your very existence—finds its meaning in Him. Without God, there would be no reality at all. The world we see, with all its beauty and struggles, is part of His creation.
Why Do We Suffer? The Problem of Good and Evil
One of the toughest questions in life is: Why is there evil in the world? Why do we experience pain and suffering? The Law of Moses helps us understand this by revealing God’s perfect standard through the commandments. But the Bible also shows us that we fall short of that standard. Every one of us has broken God’s law (Romans 3:20). And because of that, sin entered the world, bringing evil and suffering along with it (Romans 5:12).
The gospel, however, offers hope. It tells us that Jesus came into the world to deal with evil. He took on our sin and suffering on the cross, paying the price for our mistakes and offering a way out of the brokenness. Jesus defeated death and evil, and through His sacrifice, we can find forgiveness and hope. The gospel is the answer to the problem of good and evil: Jesus came to overcome evil and bring restoration.
Why Do Things Change? The Unchanging God
Metaphysics also asks, Why do things change? Everything around us—our lives, the world, even the seasons—changes. But there’s something inside each of us that longs for something that doesn’t change. The gospel tells us that God Himself is unchanging.
The Law of Moses shows us that God is eternal and unchanging in His character. Even though everything around us may shift and fade, God’s promises remain constant. And the good news is that God’s plan of salvation is unshakable. The gospel tells us that through Jesus Christ, we have a permanent, eternal hope. Life may be full of change, but God’s love and His promises never change. That is the hope we have in Christ.
What Does it Mean to Truly Live? The Nature of Being
In metaphysics, we ask: What does it mean to truly exist? What is the purpose of life? Jesus answers this question when He says, "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). True life is not just about existing—it's about knowing God, the Creator.
The Law of Moses reveals God’s holiness and our inability to live up to His perfect standard. But the gospel shows us that Jesus came to live the perfect life we couldn’t live. He died the death we deserved, and through His resurrection, He offers us true life—life in relationship with God, both now and forever. When we trust in Jesus, we begin to live in a way that reflects our true purpose. The gospel provides the answer to what it means to truly live.
What About the Body and Soul?
Metaphysics also explores the relationship between the body and soul. What happens to us after we die? The Bible teaches us that we are both physical and spiritual beings. The Law of Moses shows that God cares about both our bodies and our souls, giving us commandments that apply to our physical lives.
But the gospel goes beyond that. It shows us that Jesus came in the flesh to redeem both body and soul. He died to restore us, and He was raised to show that one day, we will be resurrected as well. The gospel promises that both our bodies and souls will be made whole in God’s perfect kingdom. Jesus doesn’t just care about our souls—He offers full restoration for every part of who we are.
The Answer to Life’s Deepest Questions
Metaphysics teaches us to search for answers about the nature of reality, good and evil, and what it means to live. The Law of Moses points us to the perfect standard of God, and yet it reveals our need for a Savior because we can’t live up to it on our own. But the gospel answers these deep questions. It tells us that God created the world and us, that we fell into sin, and that Jesus came to save us.
Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus offers forgiveness and eternal life to all who trust in Him. He is the way to true reality, the solution to evil and suffering, the hope in a changing world, and the answer to life’s greatest questions.
